Rygge is a 74 km2 /square kilometer) agricultural municipality with more than 14.160 inhabitants. The coastline is 34 km long, which most of all offers rural environments in a varied cultivated and manor landscape.
The coastline winds from the bare rock-faces by the coast to the forested areas around Vansjø. The largest part of the population lives in the nothern part of the county, which is a continuation of the city Moss. In the north-east lies Vansjø, which is a picturesque with its 200 km shore line.
During the summer there is a conciderable amount of tourist along this shore line, where Larkollen, one of the idyllic sites in the Oslo fjord, is a natural center, with its whitewashed summerhouses, bare rock-faces, beaches and the open environments.
An important cultural monument in Rygge county is Værne monastery. Originally it was a King's estate, but king Sverre made it into a monastery for the order of Malta in 1190. The farm i situated in an exquisite manor landscape.
Rygge's main church is a medieval stone church from 1140. The church is one of Østfold's largest, richest adorned and best kept stonechurches form the Middle Ages.
In 1872 a gold spur form the year 800-900 was found at Rød farm. This find is considered one of the finest gold discoveries from the Viking era. The gold spur is one of the gems at the University Museum of Antiquities and decorates Rygge coat-of-arms.
The milky quartz, which is mineral in the quartz family, is the county rock in Rygge. The pasqueflower is the county flower.
In Norway this flower is only found in the Oslofjord area, mainly form Eløya to Sletter along the Østfold coast. It is therefore scarcely seen in Norway.
The trade in the county is mainly agriculture, minor industry, trade and private/public services. The concentration of the trade and industry is in the Årvold/Varnaveien area.
Moss Airport Rygge is centrally located in southeastern Norway. With a new terminal building, infrastructure, parking area and runway, this airport is personally organized to offer a wide spectrum of national and international scheduled routes and charter traffic.
Rygge county has a vision that says: "Rygge should be an independent, rural county in continual growth and development - built on joint responsibility and whit equal life quality."
